What is assistive technology?
In the schools - assistive technology is defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. This definition encompasses both the physical devices and the professional services needed to implement them." https://sites.ed.gov/idea/regs/b/a/300.5
Beyond - assistive technology is defined by The World Health Organization (WHO) as "an umbrella term for assistive products, along with the systems and services needed to deliver them. Its primary purpose is to maintain or improve an individual's functioning, independence, and well-being." https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/assistive-technology
Student Tutoring: does my child need to have an IEP to receive this service?
No - students with or without an IEP or 504 plan can benefit from assistive technology tools. While we are able to review IEP documents (when provided), they are not required. Many AT tools are considered Universal Design of Learning (UDL) and benefit multiple learners.
